Are ‘divorce selfies’ the way forward?

A Florida couple has celebrated their amicable marriage split with a cheerful ‘divorce selfie’ which has gone global.

Regular readers of our blog will know how passionate we are at Jones Myers about encouraging separating couples to avoid confrontation. So we raised a smile when we saw the happy snap of Keith Hinson and his ex-wife Michelle Knight posing with their divorce documents.

In fact, we were so impressed with their ‘selfie’ that we contacted Keith via his Instagram account, where he posted the image, to gain his permission to share his photo with our blog readers.

Keith was only too happy to let us use the photograph of him and Michelle – and we are pleased to be able to celebrate with them the upbeat end to a three year marriage.

Talking to the Huffington Post about their decision to take the ‘divorce selfie’, Keith explained: “Michelle and I have a good sense of humor about this and we also wanted to let people know that this didn’t have to be a negative experience. We are choosing to move forward with love. We’ve been separated a year, and throughout that time, we’ve both been committed to preserving our friendship.”

“Friends and family have always thought we were a bit unconventional with this process,” Michelle told the Huffington Post. “They first balked at our dog custody arrangement, which requires us to see each other each weekend with the dog! But ultimately, I think they are proud of how we are handling things. It makes it easier on our friends for us to be friendly — there’s no need to choose sides.”

Keith and Michelle have taken a somewhat unconventional approach in choosing to celebrate their divorce with a selfie; however the underpinning sentiments could be copied by many separating couples. And we couldn’t put it any better than Keith himself – as he says on his Instagram site: “Here’s to the most friendly, respectful, and loving split imaginable. We smile not because it’s over, but because it happened.”

What do you think of ‘divorce selfies’? Are they an appropriate way to mark the end of a marriage?
